Deep insertion may reach the spinal canal.
Location (classical)
In the lumbar region, on the posterior midline, in the depression below the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra (L2). At the same level as the umbilicus (CV-8) and BL-23.
How to find it (practical)
In lateral decubitus or seated, locate the point in the depression between the spinous processes of the second and third lumbar vertebrae.
Anatomy
Supraspinous and interspinous ligaments. Innervated by the dorsal branches of the lumbar nerves.
Needling
Perpendicular or slightly oblique insertion directed superiorly, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
The Qi of the Shen (Kidney) is the basic origin of the entire body. The point is located between the kidneys and is considered the "Gate of Life."
