Deep insertion may reach the spinal canal.
Location (classical)
In the lumbar region, on the posterior midline, in the depression below the spinous process of the first lumbar vertebra (L1).
How to find it (practical)
In prone decubitus or seated, locate the point in the depression between the spinous processes of the first and second lumbar vertebrae.
Anatomy
Supraspinous and interspinous ligaments.
Needling
Perpendicular or slightly oblique insertion directed superiorly, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
Xuan (懸), suspended; Shu (樞), pivot. The point is located in the lumbar region, between the two San Jiao Shu points, which are responsible for the circulation and transport of Qi. For this reason, Xuan Shu (GV-5) carries the meaning of a pivot suspended between the two San Jiao Shu.
