Location (classical)
On the upper lip, immediately below the lateral margin of the nostril, at the level of GV-26 (Shuigou).
How to find it (practical)
Seated with the neck extended or in an upright posture, first locate Shui Gou (GV-26). Locate LI-19 0.5 cun lateral to it.
Anatomy
Orbicularis oris muscle, levator labii superioris muscle. Innervated by the superior labial branches of the facial nerve and the infraorbital nerve (a branch of the trigeminal).
Needling
Oblique or transverse insertion, 0.3–0.5 cun.
Etymology
Kou (口), mouth; He (禾), refers to bamboo, the area around the lips where the mustache and beard grow; Liao (髎), bone hole. The point lies near the incisor tooth.
