Location (classical)
On the posterior aspect of the shoulder, in the depression posterior and inferior to the acromion. With the arm abducted at 90 degrees, it is in the posterior depression (LI-15 lies in the anterior depression).
How to find it (practical)
With the arm abducted, locate the point in the posterior depression of the shoulder joint.
With the shoulder relaxed, locate the point 2 cun immediately below the posterior border of the acromioclavicular joint, between the acromion and the greater tubercle of the humerus.
Anatomy
Motor point of the posterior deltoid. Muscular branch of the axillary nerve. Muscular branch of the posterior circumflex humeral artery.
Needling
With the affected arm abducted, insert the needle perpendicularly between the acromion and the greater tubercle of the humerus, pointing toward Jiquan (HT-1), for 1 to 1.5 cun.
Etymology
Jian (肩), shoulder; Liao (髎), cleft, foramen. The point is a foramen in the shoulder.
