Precautions
HIGH-DANGER POINT. The carotid artery must be manually isolated and held laterally before inserting the needle anterior to the pulse. Deep insertion can puncture the carotid artery or the internal jugular vein. Irritation of the carotid sinus may cause acute hypotension and syncope.
Location (classical)
On the anterior aspect of the neck, at the level of the laryngeal prominence (Adam's apple), 1.5 cun lateral to the midline, on the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle.
How to find it (practical)
Seated, with the head at rest, locate the point 1.5 cun lateral to the cricoid cartilage.
Anatomy
Platysma, SCM muscle. Bifurcation of the common carotid artery (internal/external), internal jugular vein. Innervated by the cervical plexus and branches of the vagus nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion 0.5–1.0 cun between the artery and the thyroid cartilage.
Etymology
Ren (人), person; Ying (迎), welcoming, motion. The point lies beside the common carotid artery.
