Precautions
Deep insertion may puncture the kidney.
Location (classical)
In the lumbar region, 3 cun lateral to the inferior border of the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra (L2), at the level of BL-23 (Kidney Shu point).
How to find it (practical)
In ventral decubitus, locate the point 3 cun lateral to Ming Men (GV-4), which lies on the side opposite the umbilicus.
Anatomy
Thoracolumbar fascia, latissimus dorsi, and quadratus lumborum muscles.
Needling
Perpendicular or oblique insertion, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
Zhi (志), will; Shi (室), chamber. The Shen (Kidney) stores the will.
