Location (classical)
In the lumbar region, 1.5 cun lateral to the inferior border of the spinous process of the fifth lumbar vertebra (L5).
How to find it (practical)
In ventral or lateral decubitus, locate the point at the inferior margin of the spinous process of the fifth lumbar vertebra, 1.5 cun lateral to the posterior midline.
Anatomy
Thoracolumbar fascia, erector spinae muscle, and origin of the gluteus maximus.
Needling
Perpendicular or oblique insertion toward the spine, 0.8–1.2 cun.
Etymology
Guan (关), strategic; Yuan (元), primordial Qi; Shu (俞), point. The point lies on the side opposite Guan Yuan (CV-4), the place where the Qi of Primordial Yin and Yang penetrates the lumbar region.
